BLYTHE - Appleby Elementary's Teacher of the Month for October is first grade teacher Vicky Alexander.

Alexander grew up in the small town of Loveland Colo, the youngest of 11 children.

Her parents came through Ellis Island in the early 1900s and they knew the importance of education.

From the time she was a little girl she knew she wanted to be a teacher. In 1970, she graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education and Fine Arts.

In that same year she traveled to Rapid City, S. D. to start her teaching career. She met her husband, Lynn, also a teacher, in South Dakota. After 17 years of surviving second grade, the ice, snow and bitter cold of South Dakota, they decided to move to Blythe.

Both she and her husband were hired by Palo Verde Unified School District in 1987. Since that time, Alexander has taught first grade at Felix J. Appleby.

According to her grade level chair, Brenda Rymer, she has made good use of her fine arts degree.

"Anything artistic that the first grade needs to do we go to Vicky," she said. "She can do anything with her iMac computer."

Alexander considers herself a lifelong learner. In 2007 she earned a Master's Degree in Reading from Grand Canyon University.

According to Jeremy James, principal of Appleby, "Mrs. Alexander is a very creative teacher; every inch of her room is decorated including the ceiling. She is full of energy, always circulating among her students to make sure that they are on task."

Alexander has received several honors over the years including teacher of the year in 2008 for Appleby.

Although I didn’t have Mrs. Alexander as a teacher I did have her husband as my fifth grade teacher in 1989 at Ruth Brown , He was one of the best teachers I had ever had he was very involved with all his students .I went away with many great memories of the fifth grade. Congratulations to a job well done Mrs. Alexander, you and Mr. A are Awesome examples of great teachers. Thank you for all you do.
