BLYTHE - A 20-year-old Las Cruces, N.M. man who traveled to Blythe to meet a 14-year-old girl he met on Facebook, was charged with sexual battery and incarcerated in the Blythe jail earlier this week.

Blythe Police began an investigation on Oct. 26, into Daniel Stokes, who was accused of having inappropriate contact with a minor.

The mother of the victim reported her daughter had been dating Stokes, who she originally thought was 17 but later found out was 20.

The investigation found that the victim and Stokes had met each other several months earlier through Facebook and maintained a long distance "dating relationship".

Earlier this month, Stokes came by bus from Las Cruces to visit the victim in Blythe. Stokes arrived in Blythe on Oct. 12.

Police were told that shortly after arriving in Blythe, Stokes had placed his hand on the exterior clothing over intimate body areas of the victim. The victim objected and moved Stokes hand. The relationship between Stokes and the victim continued until a couple days prior to the report, when the victim and Stokes stopped seeing each other.

Officers learned that after the relationship between the victim and Stokes ended, Stokes began calling a second 14-year-old girl, however, detectives have not found any evidence of physical contact between Stokes and the second victim.

Stokes was contacted later in the day and taken to the Blythe Police Department and then jail.

The investigation in this case is ongoing and additional charges are expected.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Blythe Police Department detectives at 922-6111 or they can give their information anonymously by calling Crime Stop at 921-CARE (2273) or by email at blythepd@cityofblythe.ca.gov.

Come on folks...NO mother is that naive! A good parent is not only vigilant but checks into just what her daughter is into. You don't have to be a genius to realize this Mama ain't EVEN remotely doing her job. Think you put the wrong one in jail. Mr. D.A. it's not too late to get this one right.

i am confused as to why the mother waited until they "broke-up" to go to the police. had they not broken up would she have not gone to the police? there is a lot more to this i think than we are being told.

Article comment by: Mother of a 14-year old Daughter.

What kind of a mother would let her 14 year old daughter 'date' a 17 year old anyway? Kids on the internet putting things out there for the whole world to see and things they can never take back once they are posted. If the mother knew about this 'relationship' a 14 year old girl shouldn't be talking to anyone older than 15 on the internet. I say the mother is as much to blame as the perpetrator. she said herself she knew of the reationship, her words people. Wake up and put as much blame on the mother as she deserves.

Folks lets be SENSITIVE, there is a young 14 year old child that is innocent/trusting in this matter. Say what you want about this (deleted) PERSON (deleted) There is no need to put her name out there or her family. This is a small town, they are our neighbors. Yes, maybe the parents dropped the ball as so many of us parents do. So please talk to your children (leave out her name) it can happen any one of us. New York, Ohio and any other city are our neighbors on the internet. Believe me this happen more then we think, Blythe is not exempt. EDUCATE YOUR CHILD BOYS & GIRLS. >My way of thinking. God Bless and please keep OUR children Safe.

Article comment by: Is he loose in Blythe? ?

Is this guy (not a man) lurking around in Blythe? If so this picture should be posted all over town! What I don't understand is the fact that he was contacting another 14 year old but there was no evidence of physical contact...WHAT??? Why isn't this stil a crime? Does something have to happen before this dude is arrested? I've seen Nightline where they do sting operations but perhaps this guy has managed to avoid crossing that fine line. It's unfortunate that this girls mom seemed willing to allow her daughter to meet up with a guy who rolled in on the Greyhound, hopefully this is an eyeopener to her an every parent around. Pass this article on! @AJMcKay, I fail to see what so lol funny. I think this is very sad and am thankful for the PVVT for printing the article.

This guy WAS released with no charges. Why did the district attorney think this was not worth pursuing? Someone dropped the ball. (deleted)

If anyone recognizes this guy as trying to meet any young girls, you have a duty to others to report that to the police. Not saying anything means the next victim is YOUR fault!

Article comment by: thank you

I am so grateful this mother took this to the police. A boys will be boys attitude gets too many perverts off the hook! This article should be reprinted in Spanish. Every household in Blythe with a teenager, boy or girl, should have it posted by the computer, which should be located centrally and highly visibly in the house. Parents, if you ever needed a wake-up call and an intro to this topic with your precious baby, this is it. Yes, these things do happen in small towns, too!!

Article comment by: dating? really?

This is a 14 year old..... dating..... someone the mother "thought" was 17... turns out he's 20.... Didn't the mother ever wonder where this guy lived? Who his parents were? If he went to school? As a parent, all of the answers to these questions should have sent up all kinds of red flags!! 14 year old girls have no business "dating" in a one-on-one situation with a male of ANY age!! You might as well tattoo "welcome to your new playground" on their foreheads!

This is probably the most important news story the newspaper has printed all year! Parents need to be aware of what happens when their children, boys AND girls, have unlimited access to connect with STRANGERS on the internet!!! Monitor, monitor, monitor!!! Get yourself educated on what all the little acronyms mean: there are legitimate websites that decode this for parents. Anyone remember the CraigsList killer? This girl got off LUCKY!!
