BLYTHE - Kevin Joseph Meng, 24, pled guilty to one charge of a misdemeanor DUI and one misdemeanor charge of child endangerment in an Indio courtroom on Tuesday.

Meng had been sitting in a Riverside County Jail since April 16 after being the driver of a truck that struck and killed 11-year-old Rachelle "Marie" Rogers.

Meng was initially booked into Blythe Jail on vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated without gross negligence and held on a $155,000 bond.

For Meng's plea deal he was sentenced to 116 days in county jail for which he received time served for the 58 days he sat under penal code 4019 (for every day served he earns another day credit).

He will also be subjected to three years probation and have to participate in the continuous remote alcohol monitor program (SCRAM) for 90 days. In addition, he has to complete a drinking driver program and enroll in parenting classes.

This WAS an injustice to ALL of us. I see some of you writing it was an accident, Malem en se, justice was served. If this child was your daughter or grand-daughter do you HONESTLY feel the sentenced imposed was just and fair? This man is 24 years old and knew that getting behind the wheel of a lethal, potential deadly automobile was wrong (deleted). To the family and loved one of Marie I am sorry justice WAS NOT done in the tragic loss of your INNOCENT child. I for one am outraged and appalled at what society considers justice. When (and if) he stands before God what will he tell him as to why he took one of his precious creations from the earth too soon? (deleted) anybody want to take that bet? I just pray you and your loved ones are off the road when he does.

Sometimes justice is served in ways other than what we feel it should be. I for one would not want to live with the “what if” on my conscience, or the vision of that little girl lying in the roadway. Good luck with that one.

No matter who they are or where they're from, no one who has ever hurt someone or been hurt in an accident that was caused or contributed to by alcohol ever believed it could happen to them. Sad as this event has been for so many, the likelihood that it will result in even one person changing their habit of driving impaired is pretty much Zero! About the best one can hope for is that it might have had enough of an impact on her peers to enable them to resist the pressure to imbibe as teens!

For those of you who have never been the victim's family in a case like this let me enlighten you. You are kept way in the dark. You are not privy to photos or any part of the evidence, so you can't have any time to get evidence corrected (or object to any findings) until you are seated in the courtroom. Marie's voice was never heard. Sure, as the family we got to speak. When my daughter had the chance to face Kevin in the courtroom the public defender jumped up, blocked our view, and began talking to Keven and having him sign his paperwork. After all, we all had a stressful day hearing all the misdemeaner cases that went on and we finally got to this case last. It was quitting time for the DA's and the judge and they didn't want to listen any more. He was a .09 at the scene, he never saw a little girl run safely across the street. He never saw Marie, a 5' 125 lb pedestrian on the side of the road until impact. 15 minutes earlier and he could have claimed the sun was obstructing his view. 15 minutes later and he could have claimed the headlights of approaching freeway traffic obstructed his view. She was in the roadway trying desperately to avoid being hit because from her vantage point his vehicle was coming directly to where she was on the side of the road! I know my granddaughter. She is not careless. She is precious to me and I will give her a voice.

People your anger should be directed towards the courts. They are the ones that gave him his punishment. About a few years ago this Judge gave a pedophile a real light sentence. The people rose up in anger and that pedophile was re-sentence and the judge had to resign. But they did not take it out the pedophile. Yes Meng is not a pedophile. What is the same is that the court did not do it's job. Up to the expectation of the people. Has anyone found out why he was not charged with a greater crime? Or why the deal was made with him? There are things that we are not privileged too and a lot of things we do not know.

I firmly believe this man should have to install IID in vehicles he drives and maintain it for 3 years. This law was put into effect in California and it is rarely used or enforced. IT IS EFFECTIVE if monitored correctly as it was written.

It is terrible for this to happen to a young girl as well as the young man driving the car. I hear the young man will have to live with what he had done yes this is true but the mother has to live without seeing her daughter grow up, go to the prom or get married and have children of her own. I just do not see how what he has to live with is so bad. She is not here at all people. I heard this my whole life when a well known man took my brother's life when he was just a month away from being sixteen. My father was crushed and to top it off this man gets his name on (deleted) than the parents of the child who was lost too early. I am truly sorry for the mom of the little girl.

I can understand why everybody is up in arms over this deal, but there had to be something behind the deal. Weak case?, bad documentation? Whatever it was it was adjudicated. I wonder what came of the other crash. Guy drives off a cliff, throws a passenger through a window, may have been intoxicated at the time, and yet you don't question that crash. Must be a different name of more importance. Typical of this small town to forget certain names but continue to ask for blood on others.
