Local Elks Scholarship opportunities 2013-2014
Special to the Times

BLYTHE - Blythe Elks Lodge 1799 announces various scholarship opportunities available to students. Scholarships are offered through the local lodge as well as competitions within the district, state and national levels.

The first opportunity is the Most Valuable Student Competition. Elks National Foundation will award 500 four-year scholarships to the highest rated applicants in the 2014 competition.

- Any high school senior who is a citizen of the United States is eligible to apply.

- Applicants need not be related to a member of the Elks

- College students are not eligible to apply

- Applicants must be citizens of the United States on the date their applications are signed; permanent legal residence status does not apply.

- Male and female students compete separately.

Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leadership and financial need. Applicants must advance through local, district and state competitions to reach the national judging. Scholarship money will be awarded at all levels. Last year two local female students advanced through district and state competitions with money awarded at each level. See your high school counselor or the counseling center secretary for more info. The application is available online at www.elks.org/enflscholars/mvs.cfm. Deadline for this scholarship is Dec. 6.

Additional financial help for students who are children or grandchildren of active Elks is available through the Legacy Award and the Emergency Educational Grant Program. Each year, Blythe Elks Lodge 1799 offers a scholarship for one boy and one girl during the Local Scholarship Program in the spring through fundraising with plans for more to be able to offer more money per scholarship and extend the program to more students.

Contact Rande Sederstrom, Blythe Elks Lodge 1799 Scholarship Coordinator, at 760-861-8385 for more information.
