Council approves funding for promotional magazine

Marty Bachman

BLYTHE - The Blythe City Council voted 5-0 at its July 9 meeting, to approve $5,000 in funding to create a magazine promoting Blythe, contingent on the Community Improvement Fund (CIF) providing a matching amount.

The agenda item was brought forward by Vice-mayor Sam Patel, who was involved with putting together a previous magazine that promoted the city but now wanted something nicer.

"People sometime stay an extra day when they find something interesting," Patel told the council.

Patel said that he had an offer of $4,000 from the CIF if the city would provide matching funds and that he had provided $1,000 of his own money.

He said that the Motel Association would handle the distribution of the magazine. He said he was also looking for $5,000 from sponsors.

The magazine will promote the city's events and landmarks and will be marketed in outside markets such as San Diego and Phoenix. Councilman Mike Evans then made a motion to use $5,000 from the city's promotional fund to help fund the magazine. The council then approved the expense.

@ Mr. Patel I do believe that your heart is in the right place when it comes to Blythe. If some of the money put into this magazine had not come from you also, then it have been a conflict of interest.

What " huh, what" said about having something on the web like in youtube. A web Magazine would be nice. A weekly magazine.

So who would run it? Why not? Partner up with the High School and have the kids do it. As a Class in Creative Writing/ Journalism/ TV Productions, and thing to get these kids extra points. You and other businesses could donate to this class and also maybe apply for a City or State grant later on.

Would not all of this be tax deductible? If you do not like this idea then continue to spend money on useless people and things. When you have in your door steps a bunch of creative kids. You would be surprised what kids can with a smartphone and some time in their hands.

But in the end it should be you or another person to OK the things that go on the Web Magazine. This could also go into summer as in Summer School. Extra Credits for College.

If this is not to your liking then have a contest on Ideas to help Blythe and give a prize of 500 dollars to the winner instead of 10's of thousands of dollars to an outside company.

Remember people say I'm a crazy nut. But when they were closing down the courthouse I wrote down to have it remain open part time. Did they do it because I said So? Heck no. But it was someone else's idea also. Maybe others have this idea but are afraid to come out with it for fear of being laughed at.

A few days ago I read an article on the web about Blythe. Title Blythe gets the short end of the stick from Solar farms. Written by a Darryl Smith. for the examiner another paper. First time for me reading it. I have a thing in my computer that lets me know when there is a story about Blythe.

To fix Blythe, you have to know how others see this town, first. He made comments about the work force here being from out of town, and how they being here have made the prices from hotels to motels and food to go up. Just read it, and you will see what I mean.

After this is said and done. Someone should investigate this, and set the record straight. If what this person wrote about the businesses of Blythe are wrong. You have to stop that snowball from rolling before things get bigger. Remember just because it is not in the paper it is not true. Innuendos and rumors spread just as fast from word of mouth. or into day's age, by just a click of the mouse.

I see a conflict of interest here if Mr. Patel Is allowed to advertise his motel in that magazine being funded with tax payer money. The town needs the funds for other things. We need that mag like a hole in the head!

Plenty of pocked roads around town. Does the council just wait for state money to order that type of work? Why not just open a YouTube channel with video promos of Blythe and advertise it through social media? More cost effective and in tune with the times. Do these good ole boys think much?

This is a great idea. You could put them next to all the pay phones.

I can just see pictures of homeless people pushing shopping carts, with the police after them. No wait what about a picture of the quality of our streets. No wait I have it. Maybe a shot of Downtown with all of those new stores to shop.

It will be pictures of the river, sand dunes, and motels, hotels.

You know what's good maybe putting coupons in these magazines for Hotels, Motels Rooms for the off days when rooms are not booked. what about coupons for the restaurants also, a bag of ice when you put 8 gallons of gas in your car. Stay in this Hotel or Motel get 30% off on your order of food at this establishment. Things that make people want to stay or spend money if they think they are coming out ahead.
