Fiesta de Mayo Festival to be held May 4

BLYTHE - The Fourth Annual Fiesta de Mayo street festival benefitting the Joe Wine Blythe Recreation Department will be held May 4 on South Main Street between Hobsonway and Rice Road in front of the Recreation Center. Palo Verde Valley Transit will provide transportation for those that wish to ride.

This community event, provided by the Rec-N-Crew and the Joe Wine Blythe Recreation Department, offers a variety of entertainment for people of all ages.

Mariachi Relampago, from Los Angeles, and Latin Fuze, out of the Imperial Valley, will provide music for listening and dancing. Blythe Recreation's Zumba Fitness girls, Folklorico dancers, and performances by Dance Yard students are all in the lineup for entertainment. A shaded beer garden area will be provided for the adults.

This year's children's area will feature Bubble Rollers and Penelope the Clown. Jumpers, games and crafts will also be enjoyed in the children's area that will be open until 6:30 p.m.

Chihuahua races and a Chihuahua costume contest will be included in the festivities. The entry fees are $10 per dog/per event.

A horseshoe tournament will be held at 2 p.m. Signups will begin at 1 p.m. The fee is $20 per team. Cash prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams. This year's tournament area will have its own beer garden with beer and other cool beverages available.

There will be numerous vendors and food booths with a variety of foods and treats such as tacos, tamales, grilled corn, hot dogs, nachos, Churros Locos, Pico de Gallo, fruit, snow cones and much more. Clothing and various other items will also be sold.

Vendor booths rent for $50 and there is still time to get one. Go by the Recreation Center, 127 S. Main Street to pick up an application or call 760-922-4266 for more information

The Cinco de Mayo queen contest is being sponsored for the third year in a row, by Hair Dimensions. The girl that wins will be awarded a prize worth $600.Contestants are selling tickets for $1 each or $10 for a book of 10. The 2013 candidates are Jasmine Hudson, Irene Victoria, Toni Leigh Gastelum and Jenissa E. Solorio. This year's queen will be crowned by Alexis Morales, the 2012 Cinco de Mayo Queen. @Becky Salas. Becky Becky, I just stated the facts nothing but the facts. Think of this as an educational tidbit. For the uneducated. Where big businesses( Beer Companies) put one over the Hispanic population into believing that the 5 de Mayo was a Hispanic Holiday. Now Becky if you close your eyes and spin 10 times, the Mexican Tamale Fairy will bring you your own Chihuahua to enter in the contest. Have a very happy 5 de Mayo. Hey were you asking if I was married or what? Are you lonely? If you are always going to be complaining or getting on my case, Sorry no one home. lol

Funny Mexico does not even recognize this holiday. But if the money that it generates here, (this town) go's to a good cause. Then Okay have fun.
