BLYTHE - A judge sentenced Jesse James Flores to 19 years, eight months in prison, plus 75 years to life Dec. 6 for the 2011 slaying of Maria Paz.
A jury found Flores guilty of premeditated murder on Sept. 6.
The jury also convicted him on three counts of child endangerment for causing "unjustifiable physical pain and mental suffering" after he gunned down Paz in front of their three children and her mother.
In addition, the jury found Flores guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm, the 12-gauge shotgun he used to kill Paz.
Blythe Police officers went to Paz's home in the 300 block of South First St. on the evening of Aug. 11, 2011 after a call about a shooting. They found 27-year-old Paz bleeding from a gunshot wound to the chest as she lay on her bedroom floor. Medical personnel pronounced her dead at the scene.
Witnesses told police Flores had shot Paz and then fled.
After receiving a tip, officers captured Flores six days later in the Sunrise Apartments in the 400 block of North Eucalyptus. Flores surrendered without resistance. Officers booked him into Riverside County's Blythe Jail on a murder charge under $1 million bail.
After Flores' conviction, the judge accepted Flores' withdrawal of his plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, during the sanity phase on Sept. 9.
Flores must serve out the 19 years, eight months before beginning the 75 years to life.

Too Bad It's Not Death
What is sad is that it sounds as if these tragic events happened and his children witnessed it. He will probably only serve 6yrs. 5 mos of his 19 yrs. 8 mos sentence, Then his 75 year term will start and he most likely will only serve only 25 years for that.... so basically this young woman's life was only worth 31 years or so... what an injustice. Animals should be euthanized when they are a danger to society. BTW, for all you college graduates out there, Euthanized means to be put to sleep.
