BLYTHE - The artists are coming! The artists are coming! Southern California-based music outreach organization, The Young Americans, invades Blythe today, setting up camp for the weekend at Palo Verde College.
The 50-year-old non-profit organization is currently on a "Turn Up The Music" national tour of 43 cities, where they work with local schools to promote music and performance arts education that culminates in a live performance after three days of workshops.
Founded in 1962 by UCLA graduate Milton C. Anderson, The Young Americans began as a "show choir." The idea and organization has grown tremendously over the last 50 years, to the point where it has become an institution, quite literally. The Young Americans College of the Performing Arts campus in Corona, Calif., has a diverse student body of local, national and international students dedicated to artistic expression in music, dance and theater. The company has toured nationally as well as internationally, bringing arts outreach to Europe, Australia and Japan.
The Young Americans touring troupe is comprised of 45 young people, ages 18 - 26, who are being hosted by Palo Verde College all weekend. Organized locally by Staci Lee, Palo Verde College's Student Development and Civic Center Events Manager, is excited to share the talented Young Americans with the community of Blythe, as well as share the talent in Blythe with The Young Americans. Local students have signed up from the elementary level up to the high school.
The whole weekend is kicked off by a presentation at Palo Verde High School today at the end of the school day. The final performance begins Sunday, Nov. 3 at 5 p.m. in the Palo Verde College Performing Arts Theater. The format consists of two acts: the first act is a performance by The Young Americans and the second act is a co-performance by the local student participants and the troupe. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children.
Performers in The Young Americans touring group are all volunteers, the website states they are "simply a group of talented young people who attend college level classes, sing, dance, teach others, learn from others, and entertain throughout the world."
Over 50 local students from the elementary to the high school are registered for the three-day workshop. Classes begin today at 3:30 at Palo Verde College and any and all interested students can sign up prior to that time.
