BLYTHE - Joe Wine Blythe Recreation Center and current Zumba instructors invite Zumba extraordinaires, newcomers and the curious to come out and celebrate with them for the five years that the center has offered the fitness program. To celebrate the occasion, the Rec will host a Zumba Jam Session featuring two special guests - Zumba Jammer Eric Aglia, Zumba and the Rec's original Zumba instructor, Zulma Hammock.
"The last five years have been awesome," said Rec Director Tacy Copple. "We want to celebrate and make it special by bringing a Master class to the Rec in celebration."
Copple said when the program began in the Spring of 2008, she was interested in offering the fitness program giving people the opportunity to workout in addition to the other programs that the Rec offered. Since then it has grown in size and she is pleased to see individuals of all ages attend the classes.
"There are ladies in their 70s who come out and Zumba. It's great," said Copple.
Coming from Rimrock, Ariz. where he has his own studio, Light Vibe, Aglia has previously made several appearances this year at Elusive Dragon Martial Arts School.
He will now bring his 20 years of dance experience and expertise in different Zumba styles to the Rec and give valley residents another opportunity to learn and participate with the 2012 International Zumba Fitness Concert performer.
After receiving the invitation to instruct a class at the Rec, he jumped on the opportunity to return to Blythe and help them celebrate five years of Zumba.
"I am super pumped for this event," said Aglia. "I am so excited to celebrate with the community."
Hammock is the original Zumba instructor at the Rec. She started the class and instructed many people to a leaner body through her Zumba style for nearly two years. When she heard that the Rec was celebrating a five-year anniversary, she also jumped on the chance to return to Blythe and dance with her old friends and make new ones.
Hammock was so instrumental in developing the Zumba program, she instructed the instructors who lead the classes now.
"After Zulma left, it inspired Evy Gomez to get certified followed by the rest of the instructors," said Copple.
Gomez, Irene Harris, Daisy Gomez, Belinda Vega and Sherry Benefield all instruct classes together or individually during the two daily sessions, Monday-Thursday from 9-10 a.m. and again in the evenings from 6-7 p.m.
"The girls are great," said Copple. "They each offer their own style but most importantly they each make everyone who attends feel comfortable."
The 5-year Zumba at the Rec Celebration is scheduled for Sept. 6 from 5:30-7 p.m. Pre-sale admission is $20 from now through Sept. 5. Cost will be $25 the day of the event.
"This is going to be a fun event," said Copple. "There are lots of surprises in store for people who come. So come down and celebrate with us."
