PVHS announces modified open campus policy
Special to the Times

BLYTHE - Ahead of the first day of school, Palo Verde High School Principal Brandy Cox released the new modified open campus policy that begins Aug. 21.

With the addition of the fence that surrounds PVHS comes a new policy for students who wish to leave campus during the 30-minute lunch break. Students will be expected to maintain good attendance and behavior in order to leave campus for lunch. In addition, all students wishing to leave campus must have a 2.0 GPA each quarter. Students will be issued a pass each quarter, after a GPA check, that must be shown at the gates in order for them to leave the premises. The students who do earn the privilege of leaving, must exit the campus through the south gates that lead to the parking lot. The PVHS policy that states students must serve a 10-minute lunch detention the day following any unexcused tardy to any class will continue to be enforced.

Cox reminded all PVHS parents and students that leaving campus is a privilege and not a right. For more information on PVHS's modified open campus policy, dress code, or any other inquiries, call 760-922-7148, Monday-Friday between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. or stop by the office located at 667 N. Lovekin Blvd.

@ Really People. How is it separating the smart ones from the not so smart. Simply with a fence, that's how Einstein

For the sake's of argument. Lets just have a closed campus. That way we eliminate the off campus fights at lunch, and take away the the temptation to ditch at lunch time.

Many schools now days have closed campus.
But wait the smart kids will say it's not fair.

Really People?! Kids should have to earn their right to leave school & go somewhere during school hours!!
@El Pica Buyas how is this separating the smart kids from the not so smart kids? If the kids actually do the school work & turn it in, it's NOT hard to get a 2.0! So sad that it would be acceptable for them to have anything below that!!! You people are the reason kids think it's ok to be lazy and not push themselves, because no matter what someone is going to feel sorry for them & stick up for them even tho they don't put forth their best effot! Don't get me wrong, I'm all for fairness & equality, but I also believe this is the time they are learning how to be responsible adults, and many fail to do so!
Lunch time is the worst time because of all the kids that leave campus to fight & ditch! This will cut that way down...
& did someone really ask where the money is coming from to check the kids at the gate? HOW would that cost money?! A paid school employee would probably be standing there checking for passes, how does that cost anything?!?! Goodness, the dumb adults in this town are the reason for the dumb kids!!!

These comments are something else...

Did someone really just say that teaching evolution in schools leads kids to act like animals?....Really? I don't even know where to begin with that one. Only god-fearing kids have the capacity to act correctly? Thats ridiculous and close minded, to say the least.

And of course you hear from someone, the violence on television is affecting the children...excuses excuses. You think you cna hide violence in tv and movies from the kids forever? or just until they are 18? How about you take a little time to sit your kid down and explain to them why you dont want them watching certain things, and make rules for them which you enforce....i know, what a revolutionary idea.

Take some responsibility for your own kids. It doesnt matter what you hide from them, as long as they understand right from wrong and reality from fiction. Its really as simple as that.

I say good on the school for requiring kids to keep their grades up to go off campus.

As far as the fear for the kids feeling bad about not being able to keep a 2.0...I find it hard to believe that a school kid is trying their hardest, following the rules, and is not able to keep a 2.0 GPA. If this is the case, then the child needs some additional learning help and should be addressed as needed. Please let me reiterate this will be a RARE occurance.

Great comments! You covered it all and I agree totally. I know that many more people do, too, but none could have said it better. Let's work on the school system. The major problem is that the "government" ought not to be involved with educating our children. When the kind of government that is tyrannizing our schools, it becomes a political thing and there goes the next generation. Thanks for writing.

@ The other pica buyas dude. Maybe all should star as equal, and if they can not keep a 2.0 average then they lose the privilege of going off campus.

This way they have no one to blame but themselves. So what are they going to do get last years grades, and go from there? They have to play fair. If not there will be trouble.

The last thing I want is some kid getting hurt. Because the school did not play fair. I say let them all off campus, and if they lose their rights to be off campus that is their fault, and that would motivate them more to keep that privilege.

Once you lose something you had, you fight harder to get it back. So what the use of fighting for something you will never get. This is like the carrot and the stick. After a while the donkey just gets tired, and gives up. Motive the kids, but not like animals.

@El pica dude. I did not say say all whites can not fight, what I said were the nerdy ones. Just look at society throughout the ages have not the smart people made fun of the strong, thinking of them as dumb brutes, no brains.

The point here is now with this system, you have made to types of people. The smart and the not so smart.

My grades were B+'s in all, but in English in which it was a D-. Before I quit school to help support the family. Later in life I got my GED.

Maybe we can start by not teaching every child they evolved from an ape?

When you are told that you are nothing more than an animal surely you will act like one.

The public schooling system in America is a broken joke and is failing every young man and woman that is forced to attend.

There is no such thing as race- the Bible says that all nations are equal in the eyes of the Lord- race and racism are ideologies that are a product of evolutionary thought.

This is a societal problem- our nation has abandonded God in favor of worship of self and materialistic things. If you want to fix the "thug" problem the first step is to take a 12 gauge and blow a hole through your tv- where do you think these kids get the idea to act "gangster" from?

Mrs. Cox has a good idea here- but it may be just that- an idea. When it is applied all hell might break loose- this Trayvon Martin thing already has everyone kindled into a racist fervor. It reminds me of the scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail where the serf is screaming "HE'S OPPRESSING ME!""I'M BEING OPPRESSED!"- except they actually are being oppressed...by themselves.

No we have decided to divide the school by those that are willing to put some or a lot of effort into their school work and rewarding them for their being somewhat responsible versus those students that choose to be irresponsible and can not do what they are suppose to do at school. A students job is to learn something and do their work just like they are going to have to do in the real world. Those that can not do their "job" now will pay for it in the future and will be divided their whole life from those that can and will do their "job". Maybe this will incentivize them to get off their keyster and do something.

So now white people can not fight and minorities are tougher because they are all out on the streets fighting all the time? I guess it is true that their is alien life out there. What world do you come from? You start out with one idiotic racist statement and then write another one. I am betting you were one of those kids in high school that did not have a 2.0 and still remember your glory days of going to lunch with the "cool kids" or the "rebels" during lunch causing mayhem. Probably was your glory days. Give it up man and quit showing everyone your true ignorant racist colors.

This is not P.V. tradition. How about painting the school green and gold again. We need to bring back tradition. I know Brandi means well but slow down you don't need to change everything at once. We will all get to see or time will tell if your the one for the job. Don't let the local teachers push you around just because your from Blythe or your friend. Especially make sure we have student athelics, don't let the coaches pull there stuff! Where is the money coming from to check all the kids at the gate who have 2.0. The gates should only be used for security reasons.

You people already know how kids are. They are just like you. You are making fun of the kids, saying if they can't keep a 2.0 grade then they are too stupid, and do not deserved to be let off campus.

Well when little Johnny, and Jenny go off campus smiling and laughing at the other dumb kids that have to stay on campus. So what do you think is going to happen to little Johnny, and Jenny?

Later on don't say that the school should have done a better job. Funny most smart kids can't fight at all. It's mostly the undereducated and the none whites that are good at fighting. You ever wonder why?

So let me tell you why they are good at fighting. It's because everyday of their lives they have to go against ignorant people. By keeping them on campus you are telling them that they too dumb to go off campus. So when the fighting starts, just look in the mirror, and thank yourselves.

Open campus policies came about at the end of the 1960s as a result of incessant claims that children would respond as sensible "young adults" when given more "freedom". That worked out as well as using a marshmellow for a paperweight! At one time there were very limited reasons you'd be allowed to leave. A verified Doctor/Dentist appt or a Funeral were about it. Anything else resulted in a visit from Mr. Duncan, the Truant Officer. Like a shark can smell a drop of blood in an Olympic size pool, Mr. D. knew every place in the valley a kid might think they could hide. You'd think you were cool and then BOOM! "Hi there, miss the Bus did you"!? High School girls may LOOK like adults now and High School boys may seem less "scatterbrained" than before, but it just SEEMS that way. Closing the campus might seem drastic and abusive of students 'rights" but as before, it only SEEMS that way. In reality it may even help 'protect' them from bad decisions by lessening the opportunities to make those decisions! Kids that live close enough to go home for lunch would need to start bringing or buying their own on campus. Lock it down. And cover those "Plumbers Smiles"!

Itís really going to separate the races? That is one of the most ignorant statements I have read on here. If you canít keep a 2.0 then you should be staying for tutoring during lunch. Why would this even be a race issue? You automatically slump people of different races into the "dumb" group.

I completely agree with this! The best idea yet...give the kids a sense of earning or working for something rather than a sense of entitlement. Afterall you have to work for what you want in the real world. Good job PVHS board/principle!

@The horror, you say that my statement itself is racist. This your statement "you either are not trying very hard or you are not intelligent enough to be wandering the streets on your own anyways."

@ el pica dude. "I guess you think that being poor or a certain skin color gives an excuse for acting like an idiot." this is you statement.

You 2 have just proved my point here on why all should go off campus or all stay in campus. Because you have just divided this school by race and intelligence.
