Car crash knocks out power
Special to the Times

BLYTHE - A car that spun out of control slammed into a power pole around 10 p.m. on June 1, knocking out power to blocks full of residents.

According to Blythe Police, Joel Ortega, 53, of Blythe, had been traveling eastbound on in the 200 block of E. Chanslorway in a 2003 Ford Mustang, when it struck the south curb. The vehicle spun to the left, crossed over the westbound lane and then over the north sidewalk. The rear of the Mustang struck a power pole on the north side of the roadway, damaging a plastic pipe with wires in it. Ortega was able to drive the vehicle forward a short distance into the roadway, where it stopped.

The responding officer found the Mustang sitting crosswise in the roadway. Ortega , the sole occupant in the vehicle, was found seated in the driver's seat of the vehicle uninjured. Southern California Edison was contacted and advised of the damage.

Investigation by officers alleged that Ortega was driving while intoxicated and he was taken into custody. He was transported to the police department and later released on his written promise to appear.

At about 5:40 a.m. the following morning, the electrical cables in the damaged plastic pipe shorted, causing power outages in areas along east Chanslorway and the adjacent streets. Southern California Edison responded and made the wires safe. Power was restored about an hour later.

Anyone with information regarding this case is urged to contact the Blythe Police Department at 922-6111 or anonymously by calling Crime Stop at 921-CARE (2273) or by email at
