BLYTHE - Blythe Police Department Chief Steve Smith resigned today. A letter of resignation from Smith has been submitted to City Manager David Lane but the matter still has to go before city council.
Smith resignation will be effective on Dec. 1.
Smith began his law enforcement career with the Chowchilla Police Department and was a lieutenant with the Madera County Sheriff's Department when he was hired to be chief by the Blythe City Council in April 2008.
As chief of police in Blythe, Smith introduced Tasers to the department's rank and file and formed a citizen volunteer patrol organization to assist officers with non-emergency situations. Recently Smith began overseeing the installation of surveillance cameras at the city's major intersections.

One Question if you blame, Mr. Evans. How can one man make many people quit their jobs. If he did anything wrong you have 4 other Council Members that could have overwritten him. So if he has done nothing wrong the other memeber can do nothing about Mr. Evans is doing, other than whine and get other people to condemn him. So if he is asking a lot of questions and it scaring people. Then he must be hitting a weak spot. It appears that The good old boy club is crumbling like house of cards. What this town needs a large dose of exlaxs to clean the political system of this town.

The only capable one left is David Lane. Lane did something that no other was able to do. He balanced the Blythe budget and got us on track to pay down the million or so we owe in just a few years. Only a true professional with extreme knowledge of budget, taxes, bonds, etc could do something like that during a recession. While other towns are going bankrupt in this state, Lane singlehandedly brought fiscal solidity to Blythe. And what do the naysayers have to say about that? LOL!

One other thing. Council member Mike Evans chastised the council and citizens for not buying locally in Blythe. I saw him gassing his vehicle in Ehrensburg. Isn't this called being a hypocrite? Or does Evans get a pass for some odd reason?
Tough questions, tough questions....
LOL

Sid Ramos, what are you trying to say. Your post makes no sense at all. Are you complimenting Chief Smith on getting tasers or are you complaining about it? You might want to tighten up on the grammer a bit.

Another post short on facts. Are you able to explain why Smith leaving is good, or are you just saying it to hear yourself? Were you arrested by Blythe PD at some point? Sure sounds like it. LOL!!!

@ Albert Springer, are you for real? The road blocks are city councils like Evans. And the only reason you think you see more events is because Marty is promoting his buddy Evans. And Evans came out of no where after doing nothing for this town, he doesn't even own a house. The chief at least bought a house and his wife opened a business which contributes more to this city than Evans ever thought of doing. (deleted)

Right on Jerry. Smith was a class act - one of the last of the old time police chiefs who gave EVERYTHING to the community and asked nothing in return. And to think one councilmember threw all that away due to a petty, misguided dislike for Chief Smith is beyond sad. In a time when most police leaders could care less about the community (deleted) Chief Smith gave everything he had to scrubbing the streets clean of criminals. No good deed goes unpunished I suppose. May you have happy trails Chief Smith - we will miss you.

I lived in Blythe and graduated from High School there. Blythe could be a great little town if managed right for the people. I have family there and very recently I have visited for long durations. I have seen corruption, lies and deceit from Council Members, Superior Court Staff, little Assistant DA (deleted) and on and on. The only decent people I talked to or made a request from was Chief Smith, Officer Ley, Aron Smith. I have high hopes for Blythe but between The Health Care Board Elections with Hudson and Sartin running and Smith resigning it saddens me for the good people of Blythe. Smith is not running away or going to a better gig he is tired of the bull pucky. I hate to see him go.

I’m curious why everyone is attacking our newly elected Councilmen. He was voted in to make change. Well we asked for it and now were getting it. Blythe has been complaining about corrupt management for years. So now they are slowly but surely having to leave. Blythe has wanted to grow and prosper but has had roadblocks from unknown sources. Now I see more events in this town and community participation than ever before. Does anyone know that this Councilman has a family and strong interest in this town for its prosperity and well being? This Councilman has taken it one step above than another that I have seen. Does anyone know that this Councilman in question can raise money or provide manpower for any organization or charity just by showing his concern for Blythe? Well I and many others have witnessed this first hand. Why? Because Blythe citizens do care and have always been generous for well being. Does anyone know that this Councilman works for one of the world largest Fortune 500 companies that has donated thousands of dollars to Blythe charities every year and is providing jobs to many local citizens with the influx of newly constructed power plants? I think not, for we should blame him because of the unprofessional conduct of a police chief that has no concern for our town.

Oh booo whooo....Smith is leaving! It's long over due. Seems like now that the light is on him, he exits stage left!! Yeah right he did a lot for this town....more like for all his good ol'boys. When an agenda is left handed how is it good for the citizens?? Yeah, now that people are asking questions...he leaves. Seems like someone is running scared now!
