461 inmates involved in prison riot
Special to the Times

BLYTHE - Ironwood State Prison (ISP) administrators are continuing their investigation into a riot that occurred on Oct. 6 and involved 461 inmates.

At about 1:50 p.m. on Saturday, hundreds of inmates started fighting on a medium-security yard. The fighting spread into the dayrooms of two other housing units.

Correctional officers used pepper spray, batons, baton rounds, direct impact rounds and one warning shot from the Mini 14 rifle to stop the fights. Staff from Chuckawalla Valley State Prison, located next to ISP, also responded. Following the riot, officers recovered two inmate-manufactured weapons from the scene.

Seven inmates were seriously injured and taken to area hospitals. Three were treated and returned to the prison; four are still hospitalized. One of the four inmates suffered stab wounds. The other three are being treated for swelling to the head, fluid in the lung, and damage to an ear requiring surgery.

Approximately 100 inmates were treated at the prison for minor bruises and scratches.

One officer was injured when an inmate threw a rock, hitting his leg. He was treated at a local hospital and released.

The prison is on modified program, which means inmate movement and programming is limited to facilitate the investigation.

The institution has restricted inmate movement to facilitate the investigation.

Ok here's the basics, The inmates are here to be punished for their crimes, They receive free medical, dental, food, heating, cooling, clothes, TV, education and why? Because their punishment is their loss of freedom. If 'we' as a society were to take these things away from them and make them pay for evey single amenity they receive they would sue the state to high heaven. Once you give an inmate a privelidge it takes and act of God to take it away. If you take away their TV they would sue the state for mental abuse. And believe me the Bottom Feeding ,Blood Sucking Lawyers would jump on that band wagon and convence us all that the TV they are watching keeps them in touch with reality and that their mental health would be at stake if 'we' didn't give it back to them. BTW, did you know that the inmates are now watching 48"- 62" TV's? My TV at my house is like 36" The frustation we ALL feel is justified and If I said how I truly feel, I would sound like the most cold-hearted, heartless (deleted) on the face of the planet, so I'll leave it at, these criminals, and bottom feeding lawyers will always win because we as human beings always want to believe the best in people and that poeple can truly change if just given the opportunity. We can't help it, and those are the people that get picked for the jury in almost every civil lawsuit.

I don't think anyone should entertain your ignorance, because it's obvious that you have no clue as to what goes on inside the gates of a prison. All the inmates are not murderers, rapist, or child molesters as some will think. They are not animals, they are humans that have just made a bad choice and they are serving their time.

California has to many, tree hugers, save the whale, right to life pinheads in Sacramento, the scum that over populate the prison are allowed way to much, it's there right! Free education, medical, welfare , food stamps, dental, eye care,,, and the can have there wives for a weekend visit, to make more free-be baby's,, the only right that California has taken from them is the right to vote,
So don't place blame on the prison, place blame on the people who voted the dweebs into office in Sacramento, that gave the inmates all thoese rights. And if you infringe on the inmates right, then you get in trouble, you could loose your job if its serious enough,
The men and woman who walk thoese yards, who wear green, have there hands tied behind there backs! I commend them, they walk the tuffist beat in California, so until the voting populist in California decide to remove all the tree hugers, save the whale politicians in Sacramento, nothing will change!! So make your comments, your rude remarks, your uneducated responses ,, until you walked thoese yards, you haven't got a clue what goes on behind thoese walls,,

These comments are absolutely obsurd. Yes most of these men put themselves where they are at, but they are still human, not animals. The animals are the ones saying these horrible things about other people. They still are people! I was there when the riot happend, it's prison, there are bad people and the innocent ones are forced to react or get seriously hurt. Until you been there done that, shut your mouths!

At sped student: are those kids convicted murders, rapists and molesters??? Are the teachers in fear of their lives everyday going to work?? No. Your analogy and/or reference has no connection with a 461 man riot, where many people (officers) could have lost their lives at the hands of the lowest in society. Keep your ridiculousness to yourself next time. It is a serious matter. in

How stupid are some of these comments. You wouldn't understand jailhouse politics until you have been thrusted into them. Truth of the matter is once you have been ,you might not even agree as to what is going down. But when it pops off and your people are involved, guess what? Now you are involved. And if your not, then you have just set yourself up to brave it all alone . See how long that last. Strength is in numbers. You ride with your own and that's just how it is. POLITICS HMMM. WHO WOULD OF THOUGHT...
