11/24/2009 12:30:00 PM Rubber Ducky Derby fundraiser this weekend
Special to the Times
BLYTHE - The Blythe Flag Football program, which is being administered this year by the Blythe Police Activities League, is holding a Rubber Ducky Derby fundraiser for its All-Star teams on Nov. 28 at B & B Bait, 10380 8th Avenue.
Blythe PAL directors Pam Bush and Shelly Penley are looking forward to the tournament this year.
"I've already heard that the other teams are nervous about playing our kids and so we're doing our best to get them to the tournament this year," said Bush.
Assistant Coach Eddie Rodriguez, who has been active with the flag football program for many years, said Blythe has been sending teams to All-Stars every year since 1966.
"We are excited about this year's teams and glad we have the opportunity to continue this tradition," Rodriguez said.
Robert and Melissa Rauch, who are in the process of purchasing B & B Bait, said they are thrilled to offer their venue for the fundraiser.
"We have enjoyed hosting duck races in the past," the two said. "They're a lot of fun and often the ladies will create funny hats and everyone has a wonderful time. The kids in this community need opportunities like this and we are glad to help."
The race will start at 12 p.m. on Saturday at the headgate just north of B & B Bait and the ducks will be caught at the 8th Ave. bridge.
Festivities start at 10 a.m. and there will be a hamburger barbecue starting at about 11. The Blythe Elks Lodge is also sponsoring the event, assisting with the barbecue and lending a hand in other areas.
The Derby winner will receive half of the ticket sales, possibly as much as $1,200. There will be a prize basket for the lady who brings (and wears) the most creative Derby hat. Ducky and dinner tickets are each five dollars and can be purchased from Blythe PAL Board members, Flag Football coaches, B & B Bait and the Blythe Police Department. For information on the contest or ticket sales, contact Pam Bush or Shelly Penley at (760) 922-6111 ext. 225.

FootBall!! Any shape, any size!! FootBall! And of course, Duck Races!! Super Ducks racing for the finish line! Burgers, beer, and little plastic Ducks! One thing tho!! NO 'souping-up' the Ducks with like little motors and stuff! That's a biiiiiiig No-No!! (Plus, even a plastic Duck is entitled to a little dignity!) So come on out and have some fun.
