QUARTZSITE - Proud Neighbors of Quartzsite (PNQ) will be holding their season finale fund-raiser event of the "Rockin in Quartzsite," with their rock auction of the boulder art pieces painted by local artists on March 6 at the Town Park in Quartzsite.

The fun starts at 11 a.m. at the pavilion in the park, where 16 Boulder Art pieces will be auctioned off.

These beautiful rocks are all unique and can be seen at many businesses around town where you can vote for the People's Choice.

The pieces will be on display at the Town Park before the auction so you will be able to see them all before they are auctioned off to their new owners.

The Rotary Club is also holding a raffle for a large screen TV. Tickets are on sale now at the Horizon Bank and from other members of the Rotary, and will be available at the event.

There will be lots of entertainment and food available, as well as a silent auction of some smaller rock art pieces from local artists.

The painted boulders in the rock auction can be delivered free on March 7 to anyone who wins them.

Every one is different and they are really unique, so be sure to come out and put in your bid for these one-of-a-kind pieces of art.

Quartzsite chili cookoff draws crowd, beats rain

QUARTZSITE - The rain held off long enough for the 7th annual "It's Chili in Quartzsite" chili cookoff to be a great success again this year.

Although there were not as many cooks as expected due to the threat of rain, those who did attend put on a great show and helped make the day an enjoyable one for the hundreds of visitors who came out to sample some delicious chili and salsa.

Winners in the C.A.S.I. competitions who received plaques and points to go on to the nationals in Terlingua, Texas, were given 10 awards.

First place went to local cook Michael Hagen from Mountain Quail Cafe in Quartzsite for his "Killer Quail Chili."

David Gamer won second place and his wife Sandi Gamer won third place. They are from Mesa, Ariz.

Fourth place went to Roylene Johnson from Otumwa, Iowa; fifth place was Val Velitschkowski from Apache Junction, Ariz., and 6th place went to Virgil Johnson from Otumwa, Iowa.

Steve Sigler, from Apache Junction, won seventh place, Dick Smith, of New River, Ariz., won eighth place, Ken Brown from Gold Canyon, Ariz., got ninth place, and Libby Favour from Prescott, Ariz. earned 10th place.

In the C.A.S.I State Salsa Championship, first place was Dick Smith, of New River, Ariz., second place went to Roylene Johnson, Otumwa, Iowa, and third place went to local cook Marion Bird from Isaiah 58 Project.

The showmanship awards were also part of C.A.S.I. competitions, and two local cooks, Chili Pepper People (Quartzsite Clowns), and Isaiah 58 Project won first and second, while David Gamer of Mesa won third. The farthest traveled trophy went to Virgil and Roylene Johnson, of Otumwa, Iowa.

In the Quartzsite People's Choice competitions, there were three top cash prizes. First prize of $1,000 (donated by Tyson Wells) went to Dick Smith of New River, Ariz. The $500 second prize (donated by Norm McGinnis from Main Event) was won again this year by VFW Post 769 in Quartzsite, and the $250 donated by the Business Chamber was won by Mountain Quail Cafe.

Kym Scott and Tyson Wells also gave out a special award for overall best chili to Steve Sigler, Apache Junction, Ariz.

Members of the Quartzsite Business Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the cookoff every year, said they would like to thank all the volunteers who helped get everything ready for the cookoff and helped with all the work getting the grounds cleaned up after the event.

They also offered special thanks to the volunteers who manned the booths for the ticket sales, raffle, and other tables, and to all the cooks from all over who came for the competitions and made some delicious chili and salsa for everyone to try.

Music for the event was provided by the Goodtime Grandpas and Grandma, and the Skyhawk Bands, who entertained the crowds for hours.

C.J. Concessions also brought some delicious ice cream and bananas on a stick.

The event would not have been such a great success again this year if not for the businesses and individuals who donated prizes for the all day raffle.

This cookoff is the main fund-raiser for the Business Chamber and the donations really help make the raffle a big success.
