BLYTHE - Despite the economy, Chuckawalla Valley State Prison (CVSP), Ironwood State Prison (ISP), and the Citizen's Advisory Committee provided more than 85 families in the Palo Verde Valley area with gifts for over 300 kids.
Over the past fourteen years CVSP has spearheaded the Gifts for Kids Program. Members from both prisons along with the Citizen's Advisory Committee, held their annual "Gifts for Kids" at the Colorado River Fairgrounds on Dec. 16. Local families with children who were identified by Child Protective Services and other children-based agencies, received gifts to give to their children on Christmas day.
This year staff from both prisons, along with the members of the Citizen's Advisory Committee, delivered 150 handmade baby cradles made by inmates from CVSP, 150 handmade baby quilts, all donated from a local quilting group, and toy baby dolls donated by CVSP employees and local citizens.
Along with the baby cradles were various new toys donated by staff from CVSP and inmate self-help groups at ISP.
"Thanks to the generous donations and the dedication of the prison employees, education and vocational programs at CVSP, the Citizen's Advisory Committee, local citizens, and Ace Hardware; we were able to spread some joy to several children during this special time of year," said CVSP Warden John Salazar.
