10/22/2009 10:31:00 AM Oxbow Bridge to be rehabbed
The Oxbow Bridge, between Palo Verde and Cibola, will undergo rehabilitation.
Special to the Times
CIBOLA - The Federal Highway Administration and the Arizona Department of Transportation, in cooperation with La Paz County, initiated a study and design process for the rehabilitation of Oxbow Bridge, formerly known as Cibola Bridge, which spans the Colorado River in La Paz County, Ariz.
The work is needed to increase the load capacity of the bridge. It has a posted load capacity restriction of 20 tons, which is less than the Arizona legal load limit of 40 tons.
The county will replace the wood deck and repair or replace some of the existing longitudinal beams that support the deck. The bridge barrier railing would also be strengthened. The bridge will be striped and posted for alternating one-way traffic because the bridge width is too narrow to accommodate two lanes of travel.
The design, overall dimensions, and general appearance of the bridge will not change. Clearance under the bridge for watercraft will not be affected. No construction will occur below the surface of the Colorado River.
Current plans are to begin construction in spring 2010. The bridge will be closed to traffic throughout construction, which is expected to last six months.
